With
an aging population in our county, the Vermilion County Health Department
aggressively pursues programming to help our seniors live healthier,
longer lives. Heart Disease remains a very real threat to much or
our population, regardless of their age; but the threat increases
as we age; more than one half of all Americans over the age of 65
have high blood pressure. Our Elderly Health Care (Chronic Disease)
program currently employs a part-time nurse to offer free screenings
for our older citizens at sites across Vermilion County, including
free medical screenings, information and referral. To ensure maximum
access, monthly screenings are done at senior meal sites, village
senior citizen centers and senior citizen housing developments.
Our
nurse also provides outreach services to assess the health needs
of isolated elderly persons living in Vermilion County. In addition,
our nurse provides follow-up hypertension assessment in patients'
homes. The Chronic Disease nurse also provides screenings/information/education
for outreach work site programs.
In
2004, our
Chronic Disease Clinics provided 2,760 screenings at our
Danville facility and remote sites throughout Vermilion County.
