NITRATES

Vermilion County IL Health Department

NEVER BOIL WATER FOUND TO BE HIGH IN NITRATES... BOILING CONCENTRATES THE NITRATES

Low levels of nitrates can occur naturally in water. Increased levels often originate with the runoff from fertilizing agricultural and municipal areas, or from industrial waste water, feedlots, refuse dumps, septic tanks, or private sewage disposal systems.

State standards require municipal water systems to hold to a level of 10 milligrams per liter. This is also the guide used for private water systems.

Adults can usually consume nitrates in water with no problems; some infants, however, under 6 months of age, may suffer from "blue baby", a condition that reflects a reduction in the infant's oxygen flow throughout its body.

For additional nitrate information, contact Consumers Illinois Water Company at 442-0142, or the Georgetown Water plant at 662-8609.
