2007 SUMMER RECYCLING EVENTS
Since
1994, Vermilion County
has proactively worked to create a successful Recycling Program
in accordance with its state-mandated Solid Waste Management Plan.
Beginning with the opening of its first drop-off site in 1996,
the program has expanded to include 7 drop-off sites across the
county, and regular events that include special collections, and
educational programs. Drop-off sites include:
- Main and
Washington Streets in Danville
- W. Commercial
Street in Catlin, near the Township garage
- The Georgetown
Township Building
- Kickapoo
State Park, just passed the main office
- Westville, behind
Youhas Baseball Field, (near the Municipal Garage)
- Bismarck, Newell
Township Garage, (off Illinois Street)
- Sidell, lot North
of the Post Office (Grey Street)
The
following items are accepted at the drop sites:
- Newspapers
- Magazines
& catalogs
- Steel food
and beverage cans - rinsed clean
- Plastics
#1 and #2 - rinsed clean, no lids
- Food and
beverage glass - green, clear & amber - rinsed clean - no
lids
- Corrugated
cardboard - flattened (Danville site only)
- Paper board
boxes (cake and cereal boxes) - should be flattened and inside
packaging discarded
During
2004, 1,737 tons of materials were
recycled by Vermilion County residents, at a cost (hauling/processing)
of $205,289 ($118.00/ton). Also during 2004, the
Vermilion County Health Department hosted/helped with several
special recycling events:
- White Goods Appliance
Collection - 1,538 appliances collected during June
- The IEPA sponsored
a Household Hazardous Waste collection in Westville; 420 households
participated (of 32,072 in the county); collection cost $29,311.40
- Computer/Electronics
Collection held in June in conjunction with Twin City Recycling
and Central State's Warehouse, filling 4 semi-trailers with
over 57,400 pounds of meterials to be recycled
The
Recycling Coordinator also directs as a volunteer, Keep
Vermilion County Beautiful.
KVCB earned certification from the Keep America Beautiful organization
in June of 2002. During its first year, 15 of 21 villages and
cities in Vermilion County joined the progam, along with 10 of
the 19 townships, and 22 organizations. A KVCH mascot (Spot Less
the litter-hating dog) has been brought to life by volunteers
who wear the costume into county elementary schools and at various
local community events - Spot Less has been featured in local
parades and activities, and presented in an educational environment
to over 1,000 school children; a driver's ed video which includes
anti-littering messages has been offered to all high schools.
KVCB has begun a public education campaign, offering anti-littering
signs at reduced costs for members; radio and cable advertising
was done; fast food representatives such as Wendy's, and Arby's
are partnering to find ways to spread the anti-littering message
to their customers. Hundreds of volunteers participated in the
Vermilion County Great American Clean Up during Spring 2003 and
Spring 2004. And a sub committee is working with local law enforcement
to increase the anti-littering legal component.
It's
a great time to become involved and to care about keeping our
community clean! Step up and be part of the solution. For information
about getting involved, call 431-2662, or email Recycling
