Sealing Abandoned Wells

Abandoned wells create the potential for danger in certain areas of our community. They are the source for possible contamination of water supplies, and carry the threat of accidents for children and pets.

Well owners are required to seal an abandoned well within 30 days of its abandonment. Sealing must be done by a licensed water well driller. A license is not required if the well is on land owned or leased by the individual, and is used by the individual for farming purposes, or to supply the individual's personal residence. Before a well is sealed, request for approval must be submitted to either the Vermilion County Health Department or the Illinois Department of Public Health.

During 2001, EH staff certified 45 abandoned wells in Vermilion County as sealed.
